Roopkund is a popularly known “mystery lake” located at an altitude of 5029mts in Chamoli district of Garhwal in Uttaranchal and is also one of the best trekking sites for adventure enthusiasts. This lake is surrounded by the picturesque view of rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains. The findings of hundreds of human skeletons which brought Roop Kund into the picture lies in the lap of Trishul massif. It is believed that the skeletons are might be the remains of the people who were trapped by a sudden avalanche or a strong storm that had a visit to Homkund. Cold weather and negative temperature have been the reasons why you can still get a view of these skeletons when the ice melts down, ultimately popularizing it as skeleton lake.
The trajectory of skeleton trek streamlines from Mundoli and offers an awe-inspiring sight of numerous exotic and beautiful landscapes. The trekking tour to Roopkund passes through coniferous forests and grassy land alongside the Pinder river. And also a visit to Hemkund via Shila Samudra glacier and then to Nandprayag would round up the trip. The celebration of religious festivals in Bedni Bugyal is largely participated by the locals. And even larger celebration, the Nandadevi Raj jat, which takes place every twelve years marks the worship of Goddess Nanda. Mid May to mid-October being the best season for trekking in Roopkund, you will find lots of Brahmakamal throughout the journey.
