Shivling Peak is one of the highest peaks in India but trekking to this alpine is quite difficult for even professionals. This peak looms in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand near the snout of Gangotri glacier at an altitude of 4880m above sea level. Every year myriad pilgrims and trekkers visit this sacred peak to embrace Hindu mythology that it epitomizes.
They get down for the trekking tour from the holy campsite of one of “Char Dhams”, Gangotri. Wandering through the pine forests and alongside gushing Bhagirathi river, they head to Bhojawassa and continue uphill to Gaumukh, which is renowned for its meditating serenity. Thereafter, the trek ascends to Tapovan, which is a sequestered campsite for an overnight stay with a picturesque alpine and skyline. Now awaits the Meru glacier to stun the trekkers with its bewildering beauty and tranquility and thrilling trajectory across shifting moraines. Continuing the trek, at an altitude of 4570m prospers Nandanvan, from where one can easily trek up to the highest lake in the Indian Himalayan region, Vasuki Tal. The culmination of the trek begins here, as trekkers move downhill to Nandanvan, leading to Bhojawassa, and then finally to Gangotri.
The meadows leading to Shivling peak are perilous as the entire trail is imperiled by narrow ridges, slippery routes, and deadly cliffs. After enormous failed attempts, it was first explored by Indo-Tibetan police force in 1974 and thereon several expeditors developed multiple routes to direct an accessible trek. Also, the religious belief of travelers strengthens their enthusiasm and takes them up to the divine peak for an exceptional sight of Shiva Linga.
